14th February, Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated with much enthusiasm across the world. Traditionally, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated to honor love. And till date, this remains to be the most popular event for lovers to celebrate their love. Come February, and love will be in the air.

The origin of Valentine’s Day is as mysterious as love. There is many a folklore that talks of the origin of Valentine’s Day. According to one of the legends, St. Valentine fell in love with the jailor’s daughter during his imprisonment. He would send her love messages signed, “From your Valentine”. And after the saint’s death, in his memory the tradition of sending love messages, “From your Valentine”, on this day, became a popular practice.

According to the 2nd version of the story, St. Valentine was a Roman priest who began to secretly marry couples against the orders of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor was facing difficulties recruiting soldiers for his army because the young men didn’t want to leave their beloveds behind and go to the war. To combat this problem, he declared both engagements and marriages as illegal. Further more, when St. Valentine got couples married, he was eventually was executed for his violation of Claudius’ orders. This is when the holiday of Lupercalia came to be acclaimed as a celebration of love and the celebration of St. Valentine.

There are more stories, and all of the stories claim to be true. But, whatever be the origin, the spirit of the event remains supreme. Couples celebrate their love by expressing their feelings, exchanging gifts and spending time with each other.

Cards and candies are the most popular gifts for Valentine’s Day. Much recently, diamonds and diamond jewelry have become more in-vogue. Jewelry, as a gift, is appreciated by men and women alike. Women adore jewelry as it makes them fell beautiful and loved and men appreciate jewelry as it makes a great investment option. If diamonds sound a little over board to you, buy natural gemstones. Natural gemstones are available in a spectrum of rainbow colors, are a good investment and do not cost a bomb. And for people, who wish to make it special, can go in for natural gemstone jewelry with diamond accents. What matters here is how personal the gift and the message are?

Though, more associated to romantic love, Valentine’s Day per se is the celebration of love. So be it to your beloved who is a part of your soul and not just heart, or be it to your old, ailing granny or be it to a stranger you met at the bus stop, just go ahead and tell her you like her…go ahead and celebrate love.
